Wright Wins Final Match at Palmer Cup

June 26, 2016

MERSEYSIDE, England – With a comfortable 3-and-1 victory over Augusta’s Robin Petersson in singles play on Sunday morning, LSU’s senior All-American Zach Wright earned his second victory of the weekend and remained unbeaten in four matches played at the 2016 Arnold Palmer Cup while scoring three points for Team USA.

The Europeans took back the Arnold Palmer Cup by a winning margin of 18.5-11.5 in three days of competition at Formby Golf Club and cut Team USA’s lead to 10-9-1 in the Ryder Cup-style championship.

Wright went 1-down to Petersson three different times on the front nine while dropping holes Nos. 4, 7 and 9, but bounced back each time to square the match through 11 holes. He then took his first lead by making a par at the par-four 12th hole and extended his lead to 2-up with a birdie at the par-three 16th. Wright’s birdie at the par-five 17th hole clinched a 3-and-1 victory in the match.

Wright has been impressive in match play throughout his collegiate career as he was a perfect 6-0 for the Tigers while playing match play at the NCAA Championships in each of the last three seasons. He finished off his appearance at the Arnold Palmer Cup as one of Team USA’s leading performers with three points scored and a 2-0-2 record in four matches played this weekend.
