Auburn fans can vote for four former Auburn student-athletes nominated in six categories for the 2016 ESPY awards. Voting opened Wednesday.
Reigning NFL MVP Cam Newton is up for two awards, including Best Male Athlete and Best NFL Player. Newton is competing against the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry, LeBron James from the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Washington Nationals’ Bryce Harper for Best Male Athlete.
The other players nominated for Best NFL Player include the New England Patriots’ Tom Brady, J.J. Watt from the Houston Texans, Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Julio Jones from the Atlanta Falcons.
Josh Donaldson, the 2015 AL MVP, is also nominated for two awards. Donaldson is competing against Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals, the Chicago Cubs’ Jake Arrieta, Mike Trout from the Los Angeles Angels and Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the Best MLB Player.
Donaldson is paired against Auburn softball’s Tiffany Howard in the first round of a bracket-style competition for Best Play. Donaldson is nominated for his catch against the Tampa Bay Rays last June when he dove head-first into the stands to, at the time, preserve a no-hitter. He is going up against Howard and her home run-robbing catch against Oklahoma in Game 2 of the Women’s College World Series finals.
DeWanna Bonner received a nomination for the Best WNBA Player. Also nominated for the award are Elena Delle Donne of the Chicago Sky, Maya Moore from the Minnesota Lynx, the Atlanta Dream’s Angel McCoughtry and Tina Charles from the New York Liberty.
