Valek III Signs Free Agent Deal

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU pitcher John Valek III has signed a free agent deal with the Colorado Rockies and will be assigned to a team within the club’s minor league system.

Valek, a senior left-hander who pitched the 2016 season at LSU after transferring from the University of Akron, posted the third-highest wins total on the Tigers’ staff with a 6-2 mark. The native of Parkland, Fla., made 15 appearances (13 starts), recording a 4.04 ERA in 62.1 innings with nine walks and 52 strikeouts.

Valek picked up his first career SEC win on April 5, holding Auburn to four earned runs on six hits in 5.1 innings with one walk and three strikeouts. He also posted a conference victory over Missouri on April 17, limiting Mizzou to two runs on five hits in six innings with no walks and five strikeouts.

Valek recorded a quality start at Texas A&M on March 26, limiting the Aggies to two runs on six hits in six innings with one walk and one strikeout.
He also delivered a quality start on March 20 versus Alabama, working six innings and limiting the Crimson Tide to two runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Valek is the third member of LSU’s 2016 pitching staff to sign with an MLB team, joining right-hander Riley Smith (Arizona Diamondbacks) and right-hander Parker Bugg (Miami Marlins).
