SAN FRANCISCO — When it comes to rebuilding the Oregon men’s basketball program with a new roster, head coach Dana Altman has earned the benefit of the doubt.
Though the Ducks return just one player from the regular rotation who helped the team reach last season’s Final Four, the UO men were picked Thursday to finished fourth in the Pac-12 this season, in a vote of conference coaches.
Arizona was a near unanimous choice as the Pac-12 favorite, with 22 of 23 first-place votes. USC received the other first-place vote and is second in the preseason poll, and UCLA was third, one spot ahead of Oregon.
The Ducks, coming off a school-record 33 wins in 2016-17, open the upcoming campaign against Coppin State in Matthew Knight Arena on Nov. 10 (9 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Networks). The UO men bring an NCAA-best 42-game home win streak into the season opener.
Oregon returns just one starter, sophomore guard Payton Pritchard. He is representing the Ducks on Thursday at Pac-12 Media Day along with graduate transfer Elijah Brown. Altman will appear on the live Pac-12 Network studio show at 2:05 p.m., and the players will be on set at 2:15 p.m.
