STARKVILLE, Miss. – A little rain couldn’t hold back Vann Stuedeman‘s squad on Saturday night, as the Mississippi State Bulldogs (33-14, 7-9 SEC) shut out the No. 24 Arkansas Razorbacks (27-17, 5-14 SEC), 3-0, to take game one of the series at Nusz Park.

After inclement weather pushed the start back two hours, the Dogs and Hogs took the field in the first game of a pivotal conference series. State would strike first, despite Arkansas making a little noise in the first two frames. After MSU starter Cassady Knudsen kept the Hogs at bay, the Bulldogs got their bats going, starting with a Caroline Seitz double in the second which extended her career-long hitting streak to nine-straight games. A groundout from Calyn Adams would move Seitz to third and a Katie Anne Bailey grounder would push her home, giving MSU a 1-0 lead.

After a quiet third, the Bulldogs struck again in the fourth, this time thanks to the bat of Kat Moore. On a 2-1 pitch, Moore delivered a missile over the wall in right, tallying her first-career home run to push MSU’s lead to 2-0. The final insurance run came in the sixth, as Seitz earned her second hit of the night, driving home Bevia Robinson to secure a 3-0 advantage for the home team.

Knudsen (8-3) threw 4.1 scoreless innings, striking out three and allowing six hits. She would give way to senior Alexis Silkwood, who tossed 2.2 frames and struck out three while keeping UA hitless to pick up her fifth save of the year. She now has nine saves for her career, which pushes her to sole possession of third place on MSU’s all-time saves list.

Offensively, two-hit nights from Seitz and Robinson paced the Maroon and White. Seitz, the reigning SEC, NFCA and USA Softball Player of the Week, earned the 50th double of her career, moving her to a tie for fourth on the MSU all-time doubles list with Iyhia McMichael (2001-04). Both Seitz and Robinson have 12 multi-hit games this year, which leads the team.

Rounding out MSU’s offense was Moore’s homer and a single from Bailey in the fifth.

The Bulldogs will look to take their third-straight SEC series on Sunday, as they host No. 24 Arkansas in game two of the series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT, with the contest being nationally televised on SEC Network.
