BATON ROUGE – In the wake of its runaway win at the David Toms Intercollegiate last weekend, the LSU Men’s Golf team returned to the Top 10 of the national rankings as the No. 6-ranked team in the country with the release of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index on Thursday afternoon.

The Tigers picked up their first win of the 2017-18 season in their annual home event with a winning score of 11-under par 565 to finish 17 shots clear of North Texas in second place at 6-over par. LSU opened up the fall with back-to-back fourth-place team finishes at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic in Rocky Face, Georgia, and Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona, last month.

Leading the Tigers to victory at the University Club last weekend were junior All-American Luis Gagne and freshman Jacob Bergeron, who shared medalist honors with matching scores of 4-under par 140.

Gagne, the No. 74-ranked player in the country in this week’s Golfweek individual player rankings, leads the Tigers with a 71.88 scoring average in his three starts to open the campaign. Bergeron is also among the best individuals in college golf early in the season as he owns a No. 81 national ranking by Golfweek with a 72.00 scoring average through three events.

Sophomore Philip Barbaree and freshman Trey Winstead both lead the lineup with a pair of top-10 finishes apiece as Barbaree tied for eighth place at both the Maui Jim Intercollegiate and David Toms Intercollegiate in recent weeks while Winstead followed a tie for 10th place with a tie for fifth place in those events.

Junior Nathan Jeansonne, who ranks third on the team with a 72.13 scoring average, opened the season with a top-10 finish of his own while tying for seventh place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic.

The Tigers will be back in action next week as they travel to Windermere, Florida, to tee it up at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational being held Oct. 22-24 at Isleworth Golf & Country Club. They then close out their 2017 fall season in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, where they are set to compete at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic from Nov. 3-5 at Ka’anapali Golf Club.
