ANN ARBOR — Jourdan Lewis, Jabrill Peppers and Jake Butt all finished the 2015 season on one All-American list or another.
All three are back as preseason nods on Athlon’s latest update for 2016 and are joined by two other Michigan players.
Lewis, Michigan’s All-Big Ten cornerback and likely Thorpe Award candidate, was the only Michigan player to land on Athlon’s first team list. Lewis set a Michigan record for pass breakups as a junior last season (20) while also making 52 tackles (3 1/2 for a loss) and 2 interceptions (one returned for a score).
Peppers, the Big Ten’s 2015 Freshman of the Year, lands on the second-team list as a linebacker. The 6-foot-1, 208-pound redshirt sophomore will play a hybrid SAM linebacker role for Don Brown’s new defense this season. But he’ll also spend time in nickel and safety roles.
Peppers also served as one of the Big Ten’s top punt returners in 2015. He ran plays at running back, receiver and quarterback on offense — scoring two total touchdowns.
Butt, meanwhile, landed on the second-team All-American list at tight end behind Clemson’s Jordan Leggett. A Mackey Award finalist last season, the 6-foot-6, 250-pound senior made 51 catches for 654 yards and 3 touchdowns last season. Butt was the Big Ten’s tight end of the year and a first-team All-American on Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports’ lists in 2015.
The other two Michigan players to land on Athlon’s preseason list are senior defensive lineman Chris Wormley and junior offensive lineman Mason Cole.
Wormley and Cole both landed on Athlon’s third-team All-American list.
