WVU Plays for First Ever Big 12 Title Today

OKLAHOMA CITY – The West Virginia University baseball team makes its first ever Big 12 Championship Game appearance at the 2016 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship on Sunday, May 29, at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT.

WVU, seeded fourth, will face No. 3 TCU in the conference championship game in Oklahoma City at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The winner will earn the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

The Mountaineers won their first three Big 12 Championship games and are 36-21 on the season. WVU has won four in a row and 17 of its last 20 games. West Virginia advanced to the championship game with a pair of wins against fifth-seeded Oklahoma, 6-0 on Wednesday and 11-1 on Saturday, and a win over top-seeded and No. 5 Texas Tech, 9-4 on Thursday.

The Horned Frogs went 41-15 this season and 3-1 at the Big 12 Championship to earn a berth in Sunday’s championship game. This week in Oklahoma City, TCU opened with a 12-5 win over sixth-seeded Baylor and followed with a 13-5 victory against Oklahoma State, the No. 2 seed. The Horned Frogs lost Saturday’s opener to No. 7 Texas, 2-1, before an 8-2 win to secure a spot in Sunday’s final.

Sunday’s championship game will air on FOX Sports Networks and will also be available on FOX Sports GO to subscribers. ROOT Sports Pittsburgh’s alternate channel is among the stations airing the FSN broadcast live.
On the radio, Jeff Culhane and Ernie Galusky will call the action on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG on various affiliates throughout the state. BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES

En route to its first ever Big 12 Championship Game, the Mountaineers have been impressive in three wins.

West Virginia has outscored its opponents 20-5 and outhit the opposition 22-12 in the Big 12 Championship. The Mountaineers have recorded a program-best in the Big 12 Championship three home runs, two triples and two doubles.

Kyle Davis alone has accounted for 11 RBIs, seven hits, four runs, two homers, two doubles and a triple in the three contests. Davis is two RBIs away from tying Nebraska’s Dan Johnson (2001) for most RBIs in a championship.

WVU pitching has allowed four earned runs, currently the fewest ever in a Big 12 Championship. The record is five, set by Oklahoma State in 2015 and Baylor in 1999.

The fewest hits allowed in a Big 12 Championship is 20 by TCU in 2013 and Oklahoma in 2010. Currently, the Mountaineer pitching staff has allowed just 12 hits in three contests.

West Virginia has not allowed an earned run in its last 10.0 innings pitched.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME NOTES

WVU is making its 11th conference tournament title game appearance since 1981, when West Virginia was an independent and joined the Atlantic 10. The Mountaineers last reached the conference title game as a member of the Big East in 1996.

WVU’s title game appearances have come in 2016 (Big 12), 1996 (Big East), 1994, 1993, 1992, 1990, 1987, 1986, 1985, 1982 and 1981 (Atlantic 10).

West Virginia is seeking its sixth conference tournament title. The Mountaineers knocked off Notre Dame, 7-4, in 1996 to win the Big East crown. WVU won four Atlantic 10 titles in 1994, 1987, 1985 and 1982.

WHAT’S AT STAKE: NCAA TOURNAMENT

The winner of Sunday’s Big 12 Championship Game earn the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. WVU is seeking its first NCAA berth since 1996.

West Virginia has made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances with the last occurring in 1996.

The Mountaineers’ NCAA appearances include: 1955, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1994 and 1996.

West Virginia has never received an NCAA at-large berth in the modern era (since 1982).
