Wise Medals, Raza Fourth at U.S. Open Local Qualifier

BEND, Ore. – Oregon golf sophomore Aaron Wise earned medalist honors, while Sulman Raza finished in a tie for fourth at the 2016 U.S. Open Local Qualifier held at Pronghorn Resort on Tuesday to advance to the Sectional Qualifier at Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash., on June 6. Competition wrapped up Wednesday after play was delayed due to darkness.

Wise fired a 5-under 67 in the one-round event to clinch medalist honors by three strokes. The Lake Elsinore, Calif., product dropped in seven birdies to only two bogeys to advance to sectionals.

The sophomore opened the day with a birdie on his first, and after bogeying the long par-3 third, converted three birdies over the final six holes of the front nine to get to the turn with a 3-under 33.

Wise bogeyed the 12th, before finishing strong with birdies on three of his final six to wrap up his 67.

Raza finished in a tie for fourth at even par to advance. The redshirt junior overcame a bogey on the par-3 seventh and a  triple on the par-4 ninth with four birdies in his round. Raza advances after picking up medalist honors at last year’s local qualifying

Other Ducks competing included Sam Foust, Zach Foushee, Nigel Lett, Sulman Raza and head coach Casey Martin. Foust, a freshman from Edina, Minn., finished just outside the cut line at 1-over in a tie for ninth.
