No. 2 USC Two Strokes Back, In Strong Position At NCAA Stanford Regional
Chan tied for third at 3-under, Then 68 moves her to tie for 11th.
Gabriella Then fired a 3-under 68 while junior Tiffany Chan posted a 2-under 69 to lead the No. 2 USC women’s golf team during an even second round that saw the Trojans finish two shots out of first and in good position to advance out of the 2016 NCAA Stanford Regional on Friday (May 6) at the Stanford G.C.
The Trojans remain 3-over at a combined 571 (287-284), two back of second seed and host No. 12 Stanford. No. 31 Ohio State and No. 15 Virginia are tied for third at 16-over 584, No. 7 Arkansas is fifth at 21-over while No. 45 North Carolina is sixth at 23-over.
USC is looking to extend its nation-best NCAA Regional win streak to seven and up its NCAA best regional win total to 12. But needed to advance to the NCAA Championship final is a top 6 finish in the 18-team field, one of four regionals that comprise the NCAA field. USC is 21 shots ahead of seventh, the first team out.
Chan, whose best finish this year is a third among three top 10s, is tied for third at 2-under 140 (71-69), one shot back of a two-way tie for first. The junior turned in a 2-under front 9 thanks to three birdies and was even on the back.
Then moved up 41 spots today with her team-best sixth round in the 60s this year and is now tied for 11th at 2-over 144 (76-68). She was 2-under on the front, 1-under on the back and eagled the par 5 7th hole to go along with five birdies.
Final round play starts at 7:30 a.m. USC, Stanford and Ohio State, in the top pairing, begin at 9:20 a.m.
