In her first-ever call-up to a USA Basketball event, USC incoming freshman Valerie Higgins earned herself a trip to Chile as a member of the USA Under-18 National Team. Higgins — a Granada Hills, Calif., product out of Chaminade College Prep — was one of 12 players selected for the USA roster out of 30 participants at the trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., over the weekend.
“It means the world, honestly,” Higgins said of her selection to the U18 squad. “Coming out here to the trials, even getting invited is such an honor, and now making the team is even a bigger honor. All the girls that made it are so deserving. and it’s just an exciting opportunity.”
Higgins will join her Team USA teammates for a July journey to Chile to compete at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championships, running July 13-17. First, the squad will report back to Colorado Springs for a training camp July 2-8.
The 6-0 guard is one of just two players making their debuts on a USA Basketball national team roster. A member of the Naismith Watch List, Higgins will enter USC as a decorated prep athlete. She recently picked up honors with selection to the Jordan Brand Classic All-American West Team, going along with her award as the SoCal Player of the Year and a spot on the All-CIF First Team. Just last month, Higgins also was named the Los Angeles Times’ girls’ basketball player of the year.
