Iuel scored a first-day PR of 3,709 points to lead the competition by 214 points. She won or tied for the lead in three of the four events and set three PRs. Lopes also had a strong first day with two PRs and ended the first four events in fifth with 3,284 points.
The junior Iuel started her day by tying for the lead in the 100m HH as she ran a time of 13.81 (-0.7) to earn 1005 points. She ran in the third section and tied with Liz Harper of Washington State, two of the three athletes to run sub-14.00 in the competition and their heat had the biggest headwind. The freshman Lopes took second in the first section and was fourth overall with a time of 14.18 (+0.2) to earn 953 points in the 100m HH.
Iuel then had a big PR of 6-0.50 (1.84m) to win the high jump competition and earn 1029 points, which gave her 2034 points and a temporary 38-point lead. Iuel’s clearance of 6-0.50 moved her into a fourth-place tie on USC’s all-time high jump list and currently ranks tied for eighth among NCAA jumpers. Iuel’s previous outdoor high jump best was 5-8.75 and her indoor best is 5-10.00. Lopes also had a PR of 5-6.50 (1.69m) to tie for sixth in the event and earn 842 points. Lopes had 1795 points after two events, good for sixth place.
The shot put is usually one of Iuel’s toughest events, but she came up with a big four-foot PR of 38-2.00 (11.63m) to take third in the event. She earned 637 points in the shot put and after three events she led Harper by 99 points. Lopes also had a PR of 34-9.00 (10.59m) in the event to earn 568 points and moved into fifth.
Iuel then finished the day by posting the best 200m in the competition of 23.41 (+0.0) which was a PR of .55 seconds and it earned her 1,038 more points. Iuel’s first-day total of 3,709 points was a personal best by 286 points. Lopes ran a season-best time of 24.63 (+0.0) to take fourth in the 200m and earn 921 points. Lopes’ first-day total of 3,284 points is good for fifth place and best among the freshmen.
The competition will conclude tomorrow with the long jump, javelin throw and 800m race. The action begins at 12:45 p.m.
