Players with Michigan ties taken in Sports Illustrated’s All-Time NFL Draft

Round 1, Pick 9: Tom Brady

MMQB Editor-in-chief Peter King took the former Michigan QB with his first overall pick. Baltimore Colts legend Johnny Unitas, who was taken at No. 3, was the only QB taken higher than the 5-time Super Bowl champion.

DETROIT LIONS v. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

Round 2, Pick 22: Barry Sanders

Detroit Lions Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders was drafted by six-time NFL executive of the year Bill Polian in the second round. Jim Brown, Walter Payton and Gale Sayers were the only running backs taken ahead of Sanders, the third leading rusher in NFL history.

Round 4, Pick 44: Joe Schmidt

The former Detroit Lions linebacker was taken by Joe Horrigan, vice president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Schmidt was a perenial Pro Bowler and won two NFL championships with the Lions. He later coached the Lions and was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1973

Round 4, Pick 45: Dick “Night Train” Lane

The Hall of Fame cornerback was taken by King one pick after Schmidt left the board. Lane played for the Lions from 1960 to 1965 before working in various administrative positions for the team. He was enshrined in 1974.
