No. 1 Mountaineers Finish Falcons

August 12, 2017

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team capped its 2017 exhibition season with a 3-1 victory over Bowling Green this afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

The Mountaineer offense capitalized early with two first-half goals, and the WVU defense held the Falcons to just three shots on-goal.

“The one thing I’m really proud of is the intensity we brought to these two scrimmages,” Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “We controlled what we could control. We got two (goals) at Michigan, and we got three here today, so we’re doing some really good things in the final third.”

Junior forwards Hannah Abraham and Sh’Nia Gordon gave WVU a 2-0 cushion in the first half.
Senior forward Michaela Abam pushed the ball ahead for Abraham less than 10 minutes into the match, and the Fairchance, Pennsylvania, native gave chase before slotting it toward the wide left post from 12-yards out.
Gordon netted the game-winner minutes later with a near identical shot. Senior midfielder Carla Portillo jump-started the play, as her forward ball deflected off a Falcon defender before going wide right. Gordon ran up on the ball and beat the BGSU goalkeeper to the far left post from 16-yards out.
Junior forward Grace Cutler added the Mountaineers’ third goal midway through the second half. Senior defender Amandine Pierre-Louis played the ball up. Cutler gave chase and deflected the goalkeeper’s clearance at the top of the box. She then pounced on the ball wide left of the penalty-kick line before sending her shot toward an empty net.

BGSU added a goal with less than three minutes to play.

WVU finished with a 9-3 edge in shots on-goal. The Mountaineers also earned a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Mountaineers officially open their 2017 season at No. 5 Georgetown on Friday, Aug. 18, at 4 p.m., at Shaw Field, in Washington, D.C.
