Mickelson (69) off to another solid start in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It doesn’t hang over his legacy like his missing U.S. Open title, but Phil Mickelson’s history at Quail Hollow Club is certainly a vacant spot on an otherwise impressive resume.

In a dozen starts at the Wells Fargo Championship Lefty has done everything except win, finishing second in 2010, third in 2007 and ’13 and never missing a cut.

On Thursday, Mickelson got off to another solid start in his quest to get on the board in Charlotte, overcoming two bogeys on the front nine for a 3-under 69 that left him tied for 10th place.

“I love how [Quail Hollow] has an equal number of right-to-left shots and left-to-right shots,” he said. “I love that it has some birdie holes and you can score. I feel like I’ve been able to do that over the years, but I just haven’t broken through yet.”

It was a particularly encouraging start for Mickelson following back-to-back missed cuts at the Masters and the Texas Open.
