ANN ARBOR – One 2017 Michigan commit and a trio of targets are among the latest invitees to the Nike The Opening Finals.
Joshua Ross, a linebacker who verbally committed to Michigan in March, Jaylen Kelly-Powell, Amir Riep and Trey Smith all earned a spot in The Opening Finals during Saturday’s regional in Chicago. Michigan now has three 2017 commits invited to The Opening Finals in Ross and running backs A.J. Dillon and O’Maury Samuels.
The Opening Finals, July 5-10 at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., will feature 166 of the top high school players in the nation, who are selected either through their performance at a regional event, during Nike Rating Days or through film or in-person evaluation. Regional participants run a 40-yard dash, a 20-yard agility shuttle and are measured in a kneeling powerball toss and vertical jump. The results will not be official until later this week. Participants also go through position drills and competitions.
Ross, the younger brother of former Michigan linebacker James Ross III, is a 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. He’s a four-star prospect, the No. 6 inside linebacker and No. 194 player overall in the 2017 class, according to 247 Sports.
Kelly-Powell is a 6-0, 183-pound safety from Detroit Cass Tech. He’s a four-star prospect, the No. 22 safety and No. 243 player overall and has 39 offers, including Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State.
Riep is a 6-0, 188-pound cornerback from Colerain High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He’s a four-star prospect, the No. 13 cornerback and No. 119 player overall and has 46 offers, including Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State.
Smith is a 6-6, 298-pound offensive tackle from University School of Jackson in Tennessee. He’s a four-star prospect, the No. 11 offensive tackle and No. 59 player overall and has 26 offers, including Michigan, Alabama and Tennessee.
