Notes on the Tigers
LSU is No. 12 in this week’s RPI rankings as the Tigers play their final four regular-season games of the week beginning Tuesday versus Northwestern State and concluding with a three-game series against top-ranked Florida this weekend in Baton Rouge … LSU is 17-10 in the SEC, tied for third place with Ole Miss in the SEC West and just one game behind division leaders Texas A&M and Mississippi State, who have 18-9 league marks … the Tigers are also only 1.5 games behind Florida (18-8) in the overall SEC standings … LSU was 5-0 in its games last week, which were all on the road … LSU swept a doubleheader at Notre Dame on Wednesday before recording a three-game SEC series sweep at Tennessee … the Tigers have won eight straight games, including six in a row in SEC play … the sweep of Tennessee was LSU’s third SEC sweep this season, marking the first time the Tigers have recorded three league sweeps since 2013, when LSU posted four sweeps … second baseman Cole Freeman batted .455 (5-for-11) in LSU’s five games last week with one triple, one homer, three RBI, four runs and one stolen base … Freeman also walked seven times and recorded a .684 on-base percentage … Freeman batted .571 (4-for-7) in the Tennessee series with one triple, one homer, three RBI, four runs, four walks and a .750 on-base percentage … designated hitter Bryce Jordan batted .455 (5-for-11) against Tennessee with one homer, two RBI and two runs … LSU batted .304 (31-for-102) in the three games against the Vols with two doubles, two triples, four homers and four stolen bases … the LSU pitching staff limited Tennessee to a .235 (23-for-98) average while recording 18 strikeouts … during LSU’s eight-game win streak, the pitching staff has a 2.71 ERA while allowing a .237 opponent batting average and one home run … sophomore right-hander Alex Lange defeated the Volunteers on Friday night, limiting the Vols to one run on four hits in eight innings with seven strikeouts … junior right-hander Hunter Newman earned his fifth save of the season in relief of Lange on Friday night, retiring the side in order in the ninth, including two strikeouts … junior right-hander Russell Reynolds picked up his first career save in Saturday’s win over Tennessee, firing 3.2 scoreless innings while allowing one run on three hits with one strikeout … junior right-hander Riley Smith made his first career start on Wednesday in Game 2 at Notre Dame, and he recorded his first career LSU win, limiting the Irish to four hits in six scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
