ANN ARBOR — During Brady Hoke’s tenure at Michigan, jersey numbers seemed to mean a lot.
Michigan had its “Legends Jersey” program, introduced by Dave Brandon. Hoke routinely talked about how special the No. 2 was to him due to Charles Woodson’s tenure in Ann Arbor.
And, of course, Hoke believed Michigan’s famed No. 1 was a jersey that had to be earned.
Jim Harbaugh, however, really doesn’t put a lot of stock in jersey numbers.
Harbaugh killed the Legends Jersey program shortly after taking the job. He gave the No. 2 to a pair of early-enrolled freshmen — Carlo Kemp and Ahmir Mitchell — this winter.
And next season, it looks like the No. 1 will be back on the field, too. Possibly on a few players.
Incoming freshman linebacker Elysee Mbem-Bosse tweeted out a video of a few freshman lockers Thursday. And it appears he’ll be wearing No. 1 along with freshman receiver Dylan Crawford. Freshman tight end Nick Eubanks also had a No. 1 penciled in on his new locker.
Numbers can be changed, of course, so we’ll have to wait and see how many players keep it — as two offensive players can’t have the same number and be on the field at the same time.
In addition, freshman tight end Devin Asiasi and freshman corner LaVert Hill both have the No. 2 penciled in on their lockers.
True freshman defensive tackle Rashan Gary will wear No. 3, his high school number.
