Ducks Fall In 12 At ASU

May 6, 2016

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Oregon took a 4-1 lead into the eighth inning but Arizona State rallied to send the game in extra innings where the Sun Devils won 5-4 on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th.

How it happened: Both pitchers were dominant through the first five innings, before both teams put runs on the board in the sixth. Oregon’s A.J. Balta golfed his team-leading eighth home run of the season over the wall in the top of the inning to give Oregon (21-18, 9-10) a 1-0 lead. Arizona State’s Gage Canning answered with a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. The Ducks took the lead back in the top of the seventh. Tim Susnara led off the inning with a double on a ball misplayed by left-fielder Tyler Williams and came around to score on a fielder’s choice on squeeze bunt attempt by Moniot. After Kyle Kasser walked to load the bases, Balta delivered the big hit again driving in two with a base hit up the middle to give UO a 4-1 lead. The lead didn’t last long with Arizona State hitting a pair of homers in the bottom of the eighth. Colby Woodmansee hit the first, a two-run shot, of back-to-back homers, before Sebastian Zawada tied it with a solo shot to center. Neither team could score through the 11th, but after Oregon threated in the top of the inning ASU (27-15, 10-9 Pac-12) got a sacrifice fly from Brian Serven to pick up the win.

Box score notes:  A.J. Balta went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI before leaving for a defensive replacement in the bottom of the eighth … Oregon starter Cole Irvin ran his scoreless streak to 14 innings before giving up the homer to Canning.
