MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University golf coach Sean Covich announced the signing of Drew Dewald to a National Letter of Intent on Monday. Dewald, who recently wrapped his junior college career, joins the Mountaineers with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
A native of Copperas Cove, Texas, Dewald spend the previous two seasons at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas. He was named to the 2016 PING All-District Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America in addition to earning 2016 All-Southwest Conference First Team honors. He played in 30 tournament rounds for the Highlanders, taking medalist honors at the 2016 New Mexico Junior College Invitational with rounds of 69-71-76. He also finished in the top 10 at the 2014 Amateur, the 2014 Dodge City Shootout and the 2016 NJCAA District Championship. As a freshman, he posted a stroke average of 73.75 before averaging 69.5 in his sophomore season at MCC for a career average of 72.4.
Most recently, Dewald helped the Highlanders win the 2016 NJCAA Men’s National DI Championship. Dewald tied for 14th, earning third team All-America honors after finishing four under par at 73-72-72-67=284 as McLennan finished 24 under par to take home the title.
“I’m excited to have Drew join our program,” said Covich, who recently guided WVU through its first varsity season in three decades. “He has continued to improve over his time at McLennan. I really respect coach Vince Clark at McLennan, as he’s had a Hall of Fame career and routinely produces quality golfers that achieve success at the DI level and in the Big 12. I know that Drew brings a competitiveness with him. Anytime you are the starting quarterback for a 6A high school in Texas you know you have to be a competitive person. I look forward to having Drew join us in August, and I can’t wait to get qualifying started for our first event at Kiawah Island on The Ocean Course!”
Dewald was a four-time All-District 12-6A and all-area honoree at Copperas High and was the four-time MVP of the golf team. He also earned a pair of All-Region 5-6A accolades and was the starting quarterback for the football team until his senior season. The son of Dustin and Tiffany, Dewald earned academic all-district and all-state honors in high school and graduated in the top-10 percent of his class. He maintained a 3.7 GPA at MCC.
