BATON ROUGE, La. – Saturday morning, LSU’s men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to host their annual LSU Invitational. The women will kick the meet off at 7:30 a.m. CT in the 5k race with the men following in a 6k race scheduled for an 8:10 a.m. CT start.
Joining the Tigers and Lady Tigers will be Alcorn State, Loyola-New Orleans, McNeese, New Orleans, Nicholls State, Southeastern, Southern, Tulane and Xavier-Louisiana.
Head Coach Mark Rinker was pleased with both teams’ efforts during practice this week and believes their preparation could be a difference-maker on Saturday.
“We are looking forward to hosting the annual LSU XC Meet this weekend,” Rinker said. “We’ve had our best week of training so far this season as we head into the weekend. I’m excited to see how everyone responds to the week of training, and hopefully we can execute our race plan.”
The Tigers and Lady Tigers have dominated this annual meet in years past. Since 2010, the men have not finished lower than second-place, and the women have not finished outside of the top three.
The leading returner on the men’s team, junior Dajour Braxton, is looking to continue his strong performances in Baton Rouge as he placed first and third in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
Also returning for the Tigers, who earned a second-place team finish a year ago, are seniors DC Lipani (ninth), Jack Wilkes (16th), Bryan Stamey (18th) and Daniel Tanner (24th). The returning underclassmen from the men’s team are sophomores Harrison Martingayle (sixth), Alex Harp (17th) and Josef Schuster (33rd).
The lone newcomer for the Tigers is freshman Eric Coston, who led the men’s team last week, finishing 25th in the Bulldog SEC Preview in Athens, Georgia.
Junior Hannah Bourque is the top Lady Tiger returning from last year’s third-place team finish. Bourque was the first for the women’s team the past two seasons earning seventh-place in both 2015 and 2016.
Also returning for the Lady Tigers as upperclassmen are senior Rebecca Little (13th) and junior Erika Lewis (14th). Returning underclassmen for the women’s team are sophomores Kailyn McCarley (30th) and Amelie Whitehurst (42nd).
Highlighting the newcomers for the Lady Tigers is junior Ersula Farrow. Farrow led all Lady Tigers, earning 13th place last weekend in the Bulldog SEC Preview, and she also recorded a second-place finish in her first meet representing LSU in the New Orleans Invitational to open the season.
Lady Tigers making their LSU debuts are Amber Desselle, Isabella Hemb and Cori Mitchell.
Following this weekend, both teams will return to action next weekend in College Station, Texas to compete in the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, September 23. The meet will be held at the Watts XC Course with the men scheduled to start at 8:15 a.m. CT with the women following at 9:00 a.m. CT.
