KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Second baseman Cole Freeman hit his first career home run in the top of the third inning and scored in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI single by shortstop Kramer Robertson as No. 11 LSU defeated Tennessee, 2-1, Friday night in Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Right-hander Alex Lange improved to 7-3 on the season after firing eight innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking six and striking out seven.
Hunter Newman earned his team-high fifth save of the season after entering to pitch the ninth inning. The junior right-hander struck out two in his shutout inning.
The Tigers return for Game 2 against the Volunteers Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network, and fans can listen to the game on the LSU Sports Radio Network, including 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge.
