May 11, 2016

SOUTH BEND, Ind.– The TIgers posted a midweek sweep over Notre Dame at Frank Eck Stadium, defeating Notre Dame 1-0 in an 11-inning contest and 3-2 in a seven-innning contest.

Centerfielder Jake Fraley took a ball over the right field wall to put LSU atop Notre Dame, 1-0, in the top of the 11th inning in Game 1 of the midweek series.

In what was supposed to be a seven-inning contest, the Tigers needed four extra frames to get a run on the board.

Senior starter John Valek III threw 4.1 shutout innings and allowed three hits. The left-hander struck out five and walked two in his outing.

Sophomore Austin Bain entered in the ninth inning and fired two shutout innings to earn the win and improve to 4-0 on the season. The right-hander allowed one hit, walked two and struck out one in his nine batters faced.

The Tigers roared back after six scoreless frames in the second game to score three runs in the top of the seventh and give LSU the 3-0 lead.

With the bases loaded, Bryce Jordan singled up the middle to plate two runs for the Tigers. Third baseman Chris Reid scored on a wild pitch later in the inning with two away.

A bases loaded walk with two outs drove in the Irish’s first run in 18 innings, and after catcher Ryan Lidge scored on a wild pitch, the TIgers’ lead was cut to 3-2.
