Baseball Defeats Northwestern State, 7-2

BATON ROUGE, La. – In its final non-conference game of the regular season, eighth-ranked LSU defeated Northwestern State 7-2 Tuesday evening at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

With the victory, the Tigers extended their win streak to nine games and improved to 37-16 on the season. The Demons dropped to 30-22 with the loss.

LSU freshman right fielder Antoine Duplantis finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI. Duplantis also score two of the seven runs in the contest.

Jesse Stallings improved to 2-0 with the win after allowing just two hits and one walk in two innings of work.

Tiger relievers Stallings, Jake Latz, Austin Bain, Russell Reynolds and Doug Norman combined to retire the final Demon batters.

NSU’s Austin Reich (2-2) was charged the loss after allowing three runs, four walks and one hit in just one inning.

LSU hosts its final Southeastern Conference against top-ranked Florida beginning Thursday at 6:30 p.m. All three contests will be televised with the games on Thursday and Saturday on ESPNU and Friday’s game on SEC Network.

LSU took advantage of State’s Reich in the top of the first inning to get out to a 3-0 lead. Reich loaded the bases with one out after three consecutive walks. The Tigers’ first run crossed the plate after designated hitter Bryce Jordan was hit by a pitch.

A bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 count by Reich gave LSU a 2-0 lead. The final run of the frame came on a one-out single up the middle by left fielder Beau Jordan.

The Demons bounced back in the top of the third inning off of LSU starter John Valek III. With runners on second and third after a single and double, first baseman Cort Brinson hit a single up the middle to make it a 3-2 game.

The Tigers plated another run in the bottom of the seventh inning off the bat of centerfielder Jake Fraley. After Duplantis led off with a single up the middle, Fraley roped a double to right field to extend LSU’s lead to 4-2.

LSU added three more runs in the eighth off of reliever Nathan Jones. With pinch hitter Brennan Breaux on third after a stolen base and sac bunt, second baseman Cole Freeman singled to right field to make it a 5-2 game.

Duplantis collected his third hit of the game with a triple off the right field wall to score Freeman. Fraley followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Duplantis for the final run of the game.
